New Music: Angus and Julia Stone

Last week Angus and Julia Stone released Death Defying Acts, a taste of what we’ll hear on their forthcoming self-titled album, to be released August 1. It will be their first release as a duo since 2010’s Down The Way.

It’s slow, it’s sexy and it really shows that their sound has matured (in a good way) during their time apart. The syncopated beat swings and slides with the delicate, but intense vocals that carry the song throughout.

As we can hear from this little preview, the album is set to be something really special – and that’s saying something, considering their previous records, which achieved multiple platinum status.

Their forthcoming album has been recorded and produced by the endlessly brilliant Rick Rubin. Signature Rubin elements such as hip hop-influenced beats are sure to be heard throughout. In fact, it is supposedly Rubin who brought the brother and sister back together, after both were busy pursuing solo careers. “This album is extraordinary,” Rubin said. “Angus and Julia are truly unique musicians. They are authentic and pure people who things from the heart. I’ve never worked with anyone like them.”

That’s a pretty huge thing coming from somebody who has worked with everybody from the Beastie Boys and Kanye West to Johnny Cash and Mick Jagger.

Heart Beats Slow, their first single off the new album, was released last month.
