Favourite Tunes: North Arm

Words by Scenewave Australia - Published on October 20, 2014

At the helm of North Arm is Roderick Smith, Sydney-based singer/songwriter who was previously a member of Firekites. Following his debut Ep last year, he’s recently released new single Lately ahead of sophomore EP …., set for a November 2 release. North Arm has also just dropped the emotional, beachside video clip for Lately, which you can check out right here:

North Arm were recognised as an FBi Radio Unsigned Artist of the Week earlier this year, and has been making waves around the blogosphere with his gorgeous guitar-led tunes since then. We wanted to get to know the man behind the music, so we asked him to tell us some of his favourite songs. The results are funny, thoughtful and overall awesome. Enjoy!

NORTH ARM: Favourite Tunes

  1. My favourite track to wake up to is… I don’t often wake up to music, however if I did, lately I would prefer “Awake” by Tycho. This track is perfectly designed for that purpose.
  2. The best track for cooking is… well, of course, this depends on the cuisine. However, I think some smooth jazz is perfect for this purpose, say “In a Sentimental Mood” by Duke Ellington & John Coltrane.
  3. The best track for spring cleaning is…”Ready to Start” by Arcade Fire on The Suburbs. If you ever wanted a “gee up” track for anything you’re reluctant to do, that’d be it.
  4. The ultimate road trip track is…”Salad Days” by Mac Demarco. That be cruuuiseeey!
  5. My favourite love song is…”I can’t get you out of my head” by Kylie Minogue. Of course it isn’t my favourite love song, I don’t know what that is. It has been in my head lately for some strange reason, so as I don’t know an answer to this question, it goes here.
  6. The best track for sweet love makin’ is…silence. Music commands my full attention. If you do listen to music while sweet love makin’, then my recommendation would be the sexier moments from Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange
  7. The track that always gets the party started is…”Work It” by Missy Elliott. She’s more badass than the lady rappers kicking around today. This track immediately makes me wanna party.
  8. The best track to wind down a crowd is…”Your Party” by Ween off La Cucaracha. It’s the coolest way to round off a party mix.
  9. My favourite drunken karaoke track is…”Get it Together” by The Beastie Boys featuring Q-Tip, off Ill Communication.
  10. My favourite song to sing in the shower is… something from early Radiohead…say “Let Down”, which is on OK Computer.
  11. A song that always makes me cry is… ”Yellow” by Coldplay. I mean, that track is so shit it brings tears.
  12. I love going to sleep listening to… Boards of Canada. Anything by Boards of Canada.
  13. I can’t stop dancing when I hear… this new track by Caribou, “Can’t Do Without You.”
