Single Review: Cold War Kids – ‘First’

Words by Scenewave Australia - Published on October 9, 2014

Treating that right, broken so bad
You made a vow, never get mad
You play the game, though it’s unfair
They’re all the same, who can compare?

Cold War Kids don’t mess around. They never have. Since their 2006 debut, Robbers & Cowards, the Los Angeles band have been renowned for their profound, insightful lyricism and, moreover, the inimitably raw and emotive vocal style of Nathan Willett. These lyrics are the opening stanza of their latest single, First, which is the second taste of Hold My Home, the band’s highly-anticipated new album.

Beginning with a steady clap and the constant thump of the bass drum, before retreating to essential piano chords and Willett’s trademark wailing, First is the kind of song that Cold War Kids just nail. A stomping beat, fluttering guitar licks and gorgeous harmonies prove yet again that they have an unparalleled aptitude for balancing grandeur and intimacy.

Hold My Home is slated for release in Australia on the 17th October. The quality of both First and lead single All This Could Be Yours suggest that Cold War Kids’ fifth LP might just be their best yet.
