New single: The Infants, ‘Ape’

There’s something strange about ‘Ape,’ latest track from Geelong locals The Infants. It might be the off-time beat, it might be the strange melody, or the unsettling spaces between each layer in the piece. I’m not quite sure, but it’s certainly got all the ingredients for a unique and interesting track. It took me a couple of listens, but I like it. I think.

“Ape” progresses and grows, but it happens pretty slowly – and that alone kept me on my toes. I found myself waiting for a sonic boom of some sort – and until it happened, I was impatient and uncertain about what was to come. Around the two minute mark the drums fired up, alongside jagged guitar slides, vocal screeches and more, before settling back into the original, spacious feel of the track.

“Ape” is the second single from the up and coming four-piece, following on from “Halves,” which carried a similarly spooky vibe, but seemed a little fuller, a lot darker and far more sure of itself. I’ll admit that I prefer the first single, but I’m interested in seeing how the two work together on their forthcoming EP. It also seems like the kind of music that’ll really embrace the live setting. Those rumbling drums, the emphasised blank spaces and the visceral vocals could have a really strong effect on any audience.

The Infants’ sophomore EP Low Rumble will be released digitally on September 5.
